ETU European Sprint Championships
Allan Wilson was on international duty for team GB in Eilat at the European Age Group Championships on 20th April. Allan narrowly missed out on a podium place finishing 4th in his age group for the Sprint Triathlon. Well done Allan.

British Fell Running Championships – Saturday 14th April
Anna Bartlett (SYTri’s very own Chrissie Wellington?) was on great form at the national championships race at Coledale finishing a very impressive 4th overall in the Women’s race and winning her age group.

Mud packs normally come with scented candles and pamper weekends. Not for Kathy Jones and Sarah Exon who went for a 10k mud bath with a difference in the scenic grounds of Weston Park on 3rd March 2012. Pictured (up to her armpits in the stuff) is Kathy who described the race as having “ridiculous obstacles like camoflage nets to go under, big straw bales to go over, very muddy trenches to run through and also you have to go through the water jump that they use for the horse competition they have there.”
Proof if it was needed that SYTri are a tough bunch. In true club spirit Kathy’s verdict on the race is that it “ was a really tough but great event with a nice atmosphere and really supportive marshalls. I would really recommend it...if you don't mind smelling like a stinky mud pit for a day or too!!!”
Well done to you both.

Alison Wilson and Mel Oldacre were back to winning ways at the Halesowen Aquathlon on 26th February 2012. Both won their age groups making this a promising start to SYTri’s 2012 season.

SYTri were out in force at the Endurance Life Coastal Trail Series at Holyhead on 21st January 2012. Eight members completed the half marathon (actually 16 miles) and Huw Dolphin an epic 28 mile marathon. There were plenty of hills and despite gusty conditions some great times. Anna Bartlett finished second overall winning the women’s race by a country mile and Bob Evans won his age group. Well done folks. It was tough out there!

A massive well done to SYTri’s ‘Kona King’ Dave
Mawhinney for completing the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on 14th October 2011. On a day when even the Pro’s were wilting in the heat, Dave pulled a Kona PB out of the bag finishing in a time of 11 hours 17 minutes. Dave qualified through his placing at Ironman UK which is a fantastic achievement in itself. Pulling it all together at such a prestigious event must be doubly pleasing though. Your club is proud of you. For Dave’s full race report click this link.

The end of the Tri season does not necessarily mean that you are all easing off the gas. SYTri members Jenny York, Eric Stannard and Dave and Sarah Mawhinney took the Cheshire Duathlon by storm on 6th November 2011, competing in the standard distance event (5km/30km/5km). Well done to Jenny, Dave and Sarah who all won their age groups with Jenny finishing second lady overall.

Rob Kerr and Paul Ingram managed to squeeze one last triathlon into the 2011 season but had to go all the way to Barcelona to find warm water.
On 16th October and on the stunning beach front at Barcelona they both entered the Olympic Tri with about 3,000 others. The Mediterranean was in an unusually stormy mood with a 10 ft high swell threatening to dampen the mood. Seeing a friendly face only a few places down in transition always helps though. Once they had been spat out of the waves it was onto the draft legal bike leg. Forming trains and trying to drop any free wheelers was great fun on the pan flat course.
The run course was an out and back loop taking in much of the sea front. Despite the soaring temperatures (nothing to do with the nudist beach they had to run past) the benefit of the Thursday track sessions paid off. Paul smashed his 10k PB with a split of 38.27 with Rob going faster with a 37.58 split.
Overall Rob finished in 151st spot with a time of 2:16:34. Paul finished in 61st spot in a time of 2:12:34. What was more pleasing that taking into account the separate Elite race Paul would have finished 151st and Rob 181st out of 340 Elites.
Whilst the website for the Garmin Barcelona Triathlon does not inspire confidence the event is well organised and for those wanting the razzmatazz and atmosphere of an Ironman event without the distance this comes pretty close. Oh and the venue is pretty stunning as well.

SYTri rounded off a successful season at the Ludlow Sprint Triathlon on 25th September 2011. 46 SYTri members were on the start line for this Sprint distance Tri involving a 400m swim 16 mile bike and 4 mile run around the roads of South Shropshire. SYTri picked up the Team Trophy for the second year running with members Greg Smith winning the men’s race with a time of 1hr 15 min 55 sec and Vicky Grimmer winning the women’s race in a time of 1 hr 22min 32sec. Both Louise Reynolds and Barbara Somers finished third in their respective age groups. For many members this was their first triathlon and with the club’s orange and black kit on show at every turn they enjoyed fantastic support.

Bala Standard Tri. With the arrival of the forecast gale force winds and heavy rain there were plenty of DNS’s at this years Bala Tri. A few hardy souls from SYTri still braved the conditions and put in strong performances. Anna Bartlett finished 7th female overall and winning her age group in a time of 2:24:08. Only 5 seconds split Tony Marrs and Bob Wilson with Tony in at 2:35:22 and Bob at 2:35:27. This was Bob’s first outing in SYTri colours which deserves a picture. Bob Evans came home in 2:42:58 and Emily Marrs in 2:43:58. Well done to you all, particularly for toughing it out through the waves, driving rain and biting cold.

David Virden and son Matthew completed the Three Spires Sprint triathlon in Lichfield on 18th September 2011. They were the only SYTri representatives just showing how far you have to go these days to get away from the orange and black.
Despite being neck and neck at the Shrewsbury Tri two weeks ago (with Dad pipping Matthew to the line for the very first time at that race), Matthew produced the race of his season and finished a highly credible 33rd overall and 1st in his age group (M17-19). Mathew’s time of 1:08 was a whopping 5 minutes ahead of Dad, who finished 55th overall and 5th in his age group (M44-49).
This is Matthew’s second time taking the podium honours. He credits his recent success to sprinting up and down Caer Caradoc near Church Stretton, a new season of rugby training but more importantly all of the stick he received from his sisters for letting his Dad beat him last time out. After the race on Sunday Matthew then went back to Shrewsbury to play full-back for the Shrewsbury Colts U19 team (proving rugby is easier than triathlon – just kidding…)

Huw Dolphin notched up an iron distance PB at Challenge Henley on 18th September 2011. He completed the course in a fantastic 12 hours 21 minutes 40 seconds. Huw’s full report is attached including details of a 7-pee swim. That must be a club record… Read on for the full write up…

Marc Derbyshire has just returned from the ITU Age Group World Championships in Beijing. On a tough bike and run course (and a non wetsuit swim) he finished a fantastic 2:14 and was 16th in his age group (4th GB). Well done Marc. Read on for the full write up…

A very big pat on the back to everyone who participated in the Shrewsbury Triathlon on 4th September. The SYTri kit was everywhere and looked great in the sun. Best of all everyone was smiling. Whether you were a marshal or competing you all did SYTri proud. It was also great to see so many new triathletes taking part and hopefully getting bitten by the bug. Well done to you all but special mentions for Vicky Grimmer who took 1st overall female and Allan Wilson, Barbara Somers and Sarah Mawhinny who all won their age groups.

Sunday 4th September saw David Wilson take part in the Wolverhampton Marathon as a ”bit of a training run for the Chester Marathon on October 9th.” This was race number 18 out of the 20 race NSRRA series (North Staffordshire Road Runners Association) and David came home in a time of 3hrs 32 minutes dead in 70th place. It now looks likely that he will finish the series in 5th place in his group. A very impressive performance by anyone’s standards particularly as this is David’s first full season.

On Sunday July 31st Dave and Sarah Mawhinney raced Ironman UK. This was Daves third visit to IMUK in Bolton and Sarah’s second.
They both had great races. Fortunately the weather was as near perfect as you can get. This was a big relief after the atrocious weather they raced in at Bala middle distance triathlon in June! The good weather and the increase in the number of Hawaii slots at this years IMUK led to a fast field and some fast times in all age groups on what is a challenging Ironman course.
Dave and Sarah both did big PB’s. Dave finished in 10hrs29min42sec, third in his age group and qualifying for the world championships in Kona, Hawaii in October. Sarah finished ninth in her age group in a time of 13hrs23min45sec which she was thrilled with.
Former SYTri member Fiona Boyd also raced this with them for the second time and she did a good PB of 11hrs4min33sec and finished 5th in her age group.

On Saturday 30th July 2011 Alison and Allan Wilson both took silver medals in their age groups at the British Aquathlon Championships. The race was held in Littlehampton, Sussex and involved a 750 open water swim in the tidal estuary of the river Arun. This had promised to be ‘slack water’ but turned into a tough battle upstream. Judging by the result, SYtri’s Tuesday river swim sessions must have paid off. A 5km run followed, which was basically flat but the scorching heat (it’s warmer down south) made the run hard work. Well done for flying the SYtri flag and getting fine silver medals to boot.

Tony Marrs flew the flag for SYTri and entered a 5K race on a rock hard beach near Atlantic City and ended up winning his age group in 21:20mins and overall 9th out of 130. The temp was 95! He also spotted this bike - seems carbon fibre out, wood in!

The Tour de France heads into the Alps this week and we get to see the GC contenders do battle on the famous Cols of Glandon, Telegraphe, the
monstrous Galibier and Alpe D'Huez. This year they will follow in the pedal strokes of SYTri's Huw Dolphin who recently completed the Marmotte. The Marmotte is an epic cycling challenge taking in these four Haute Categorie climbs over a 107 mile ride. The route is almost the same as this Fridays stage of the Tour although the Tour misses out the Galiber and is 37 miles shorter! Wimps.

Well done Huw. Here he is out of the saddle and on the attack on the last few turns of Alpe D'Huez. Huw assures us this was just showboating for the cameras and that the rest of the time he was chewing his handlebars just trying to survive. Either way it is good to see the SYTri logo flying high.

The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco is one or the worlds most iconic triathlons and possibly on the bucket list for some of you. On 5th June this year SYTri’s Rob Kerr took to the tepid waters under the Golden Gate Bridge and we are pleased to say escaped from Alcatraz relatively unscathed. For the full story on how Rob (with the prayers of the local Vicar) left the safety of the San Francisco Belle, lost his goggles in the strong tide under the Rock and then had to deal with a run across the soft sand, please click to read more....

Five SYTri members have recently returned from Pontevedra in north west Spain, having represented Great Britain in the European Age group Triathlon Championships on 25th and 26th June 2011.
Barbara Somers and Allan Wilson competed in the sprint distance event. This consisted of a 750 meter open water swim in the tidal Rio Lerez followed by a hilly 20 kilometer bike course before finally completing a 5 kilometer run through the streets of the city finishing in front of cheering crowds at the sports stadium. Barbara finished in 7th position and Allan just outside of the medals in 5th.
Charlotte Mountain , Sam Mountain and Bob Evans then competed in the Olympic distance race which covered twice the sprint distance in each discipline. In what turned out to be a very hot and testing climate all put in strong performances with Charlotte finishing 13th in her event with Bob 10th and Sam 16th..
The event also included races for the Elite men and women, university teams and para triathletes. As a qualifying race for next years Olympic games it attracted a number of Olympic gold medal hopefuls including GB’s Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee and Spains reigning World Champion Javier Gomez.
To represent team GB all five athletes had qualified through their finishing positions for their age groups at triathlons around the country during the previous 12 months. In Spain they were competing against the best age group triathletes from the rest of Europe including Russia and Israel.
A fantastic effort by all.

Congratulations to Mel Oldacre who competed in the Liverpool Triathlon on Sunday 26th June. This was a closed road event along the dock side in the city centre with the swim was in the Queens dock. Mel took part in the sprint event and from a field of 370 she won her age group finishing 20th female overall. Mel’s thoughts on her fantastic first win were, “A very pleasing performance thanks in part to the training sessions with Sy Tri.”

Well done to Paul Ingram and Kevin Morris, who together cycled “End to End” last week covering almost 900 miles, and raising a fantastic £20,000 for Cancer Research. Brilliant effort guys!

Congratulations to Anna Bartlett on a brilliant result at the ETU European Championships in Limerick (40-44 Age group) Here is her race report:
Distances: 10km Run (as fast as you can). 40 km Bike (as fast as you can) and 5km Run (and hold on) (Distances in country miles, very similar to fell running!!!)
For a fell runner this course has got to be the flattest I,ve ever raced!! I decided to enter a Duathlon because my Dad said, when I was a wee pup."Anna, Make sure you do everything that you can possibly do in your life!!! Which has got me in to a lot of bother and kept me very busy!!
I Qualified at the Dambuster Duathlon in March, (on my Birthday and the same day Wales played France in Paris, So i had to be quickish to get back.)
Any way "The race"
I came 5th in my age category.(2 hrs 06.40) Behind Dutch and German ladies Anja and Doerte and my awesome fell-runner friend and star Christine Howard ( who can,t swim, phew) and fabulous biker Vicki Wade (look out for her at 2012) We had such a great time. I recommend duathlon to those of you who have trouble getting your wet suit on,and off ! or who are frightened of geese.

Very well done to Allan Wilson who came first in his age group at Grendon Sprint Triathlon & also Halesowen Sprint. Putting SYTri firmly on the map!

SYTri named BTF West Midlands Club of the Year 2011
As SYTri was set up only four years ago we are very proud to have been named the BTF West Midlands club of the Year for 2011. The BTF quoted the club's 'meteoric rise' as the reason for selecting us above much larger and older clubs. Whilst we may say so ourselves the ‘club with smiles’ won out and the award is tribute to the friendly atmosphere SYTri members seem to take with us wherever we go. The award has helped secure funding to support training for additional and higher level coaching and the club remains committed to providing access to triathlon for anyone with an interest in the sport whatever their ability. A big pat on the back to you all and remember, when you wear the black and orange and no matter how tough it gets, keep spreading the love…(of all things tri that is)

2012 Race season underway
Despite the April showers it has been a busy month for the Black and Orange. Big turn outs at Chirk on 21st April and Wombourne on 28th April almost made these home events for SYTri and certainly made for a great atmosphere with plenty of spectators as well as competitors. April saw quite a few members completing their first triathlon so well done if you were one of those.
There were also plenty of podium places for club members with both Mel Oldacre and Dave Mawhinney took first in their age groups at Chirk and of the 31 members who took part in Wombourne there were 9 podium places. Anna Bartlett – 1st Senior Women, Annica Goddard – 3rd Senior Women, Charlotte Mountain – 2nd Female V40, Barbara Cole – 1st Female V50,Pauline Hughes 2nd Female V50 and Mel Oldacre – 1st Female V60. The boys also got in the action with Mark Griffiths – 3rd Male V40, Tony Marrs -3rd Male V50 and Sam Mountain – 3rd Male V60.
Well done to all.
